What’s happening in Myanmar- People in Need

Since the Myanmar army overthrew the democratically elected government on February 1, 2021, the crackdown and use of force by the junta’s forces has become more brutal, and as many as 2,000 civilians have already lost their precious lives. Tens of thousands were unlawfully arrested, detained, imprisoned and tortured. According to the witnesses, the military has been purposely targeting civilians. This includes abductions, tortures and killings of civilians – including women and children – and thoroughly torching villages. According to UNHCR, as of August 1,  2022, an estimated 42,300 refugees have fled to neighboring countries and an estimated 897,100 or more have been displaced internally. In addition, the economy has fallen critically weak, and the number of people and citizens suffering from living difficulties and hunger is increasing.

Immediately after the coup, civil servants from various sectors joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) for justice and democracy. Today, many CDM participants have lost their jobs, their income, and have been expelled from dormitories, putting them in a difficult situation. Many civil servants escape from their homes for fears of slaughter after being arrested or tortured. Also, it is extremely difficult for them to find alternative jobs in the country due to the oppression by the military.

In addition to the arrest of medical workers for participating in the civil disobedience movement, the military brutally cracked down against volunteer health workers who treat the general public. This leads to collapse of health care systems, and  lives that could have been saved were lost one after another.

Our Activities

Until now, we have contributed to people in need through membership fees and various fund-raising activities.  However, as the coup d’etat and hostilities continue for a long time, it is becoming more difficult to collect money for diverse destinations.

ISMSP will provide livelihood support and medical support (including mental health care) to displaced persons and medical workers who have been evacuated due to the crackdown of the military government. In addition, we will provide financial support to CDM staff who are planning to start a business, and livelihood support for CDM staff who are having trouble with living expenses due to unstable work.

It is to provide financial support to CDM staff who are planning to start a business.

The members, who believed that it was necessary to create employment and income for stable income, have been implementing projects to secure income for CDM participants. We have supported various businesses such as computer classes for children, livestock businesses, and online shops until the CDM participants can earn their own living.

We will use your contributions in our above mentioned activities. (Note: We may use personal bank accounts for money transfer to Myanmar.)
